LAWN CARE

Nice lush green lawns serve as the foundation for a gorgeous yard. This backdrop will highlight and complement all your other landscaping. Establishing a great lawn doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It can be planted from seed or sodded for faster results.

Whether you are establishing a new lawn or caring for an existing one, the two most important factors are soil preparation (or soil maintenance) and choosing the proper grass species for the site.

The landscaping consultants at Holder Outdoor can test your lawn to see what additives are needed for proper growth. They’ll also give professional advice about the types of seed available, including Bermuda, Zoysia, Tall Fescue, Bluegrass, Centipedegrass, and Ryegrass.

The best looking lawns receive care year-round. Holder Outdoor  can put your lawn on a maintenance schedule, removing leaves, applying pre-emergents and fertilizer at the proper times, and keeping the lawn at its optimal height throughout the growing season. Sod Installation

If you want the instant gratification of a beautiful lawn, sod installation is for you. We provide only the highest quality fresh sod in a variety of grass types to meet your needs.  We will provide all soil and area preparation, as well as on-going care for your investment.

Your lawn should be kept moist for two weeks following sod installation to provide a good environment for root establishment.

Seeding & Fertilization

Seeding, or spreading grass seeds on prepared soil, should be done with a good quality broadcast spreader to ensure even coverage. A light covering of wheat straw is placed over the seed and the area is keep moist until new growth begins.  Special seeding mulch is also available to help retain moisture and stabilize the seed.

Lawns need certain nutrients to survive and grow. These nutrients are found in the soil and surrounding environment. For optimum health, you will need to provide appropriate amounts of:

  • Nitrogen (N)
  • Phosphorus (P)
  • Potassium (K)

Holder Outdoor  consultants can perform a soil test to determine what your lawn needs. We also know the optimal time of year to seed and fertilize. Let us take away the guess work and provide you with a beautiful lawn.

Turf Maintenance & Weed Control

When the leaves have nearly all fallen and are being taken off of the lawn, it is time again to start thinking about the health of your turf grass.  Preventing those broad leaf weeds and nuisance grasses that come all too soon in the growing season is a great option!

It is much less expensive and more effective to prevent them before hand than battling to eliminate them once they have taken hold.  The first application of fertilizer with a good quality pre-emergent is most effective in January. This provides a good barrier before the weeds begin to germinate.  A good application of fertilizer is really important to help bring the grass out of its winter dormant phase.

Holder Outdoor consultants would be glad to discuss plans for the long term health of your turf, or estimate a one time application if that is more in line with your priorities.  And remember, because we buy in bulk, we can usually provide material and labor for about what you would expect to pay at the home improvement store!

Benefits of Soil Aeration include:

  • Increased decomposition of thatch by enhancing the activity of soil microorganisms
  • Increased water, nutrients and oxygen movement into soil
  • Improved rooting activity
  • Enhanced infiltration of rainfall and irrigation
  • Prevention of fertilizer and pesticide run-off

Your lawn needs to be aerated if:

  • Grass roots extend only 1-2 inches
  • Lawn is heavily used
  • Lawn is driven on regularly
  • Turf looks thin or unthrifty
  • Thatch layer is thicker than 1/2 inch
  • Soil is heavy clay

Call Holder Outdoor for an aeration analysis today.

Soil Aeration

Soil aeration involves removing small plugs or cores from the lawn. Aeration controls thatch buildup and renews heavily compacted soil. Compaction occurs through sustained heavy use from play, pets, traffic and parking. Poorly drained or wet sites are most severely affected. Compaction reduces the space within the soil that would normally hold air. Besides being a physical barrier to root growth, compaction inhibits the oxygen and absorption of water and nutrients that roots need to grow
